Spanish Riding School Vienna morning exercise

Witness the Morning Exercise with music which offers an insight into the training of the riders and their Lipizzans. You will see the training of the grey young stallions and the fully-trained school stallions in the beautiful setting of the Winter Riding School, accompanied by classical Viennese music.

The Morning Exercise includes relaxation exercises, the refining and perfecting of lessons and the targeted strengthening of muscles. Every 30 minutes a horse change takes place. During the two hours of public training you will experience four groups of stallions in different training levels.

In order to protect the horses, the famous high level jumps, which are shown during the performances, are not practised on a daily basis and are only occasionally seen during the Morning Exercise.

Vienna Art Nouveau: Otto Wagner and the City Trains – 3-Hour walk with a Historian

Learn about German Jugendstil, or Art Nouveau, on this 3-hour walking tour through the metro of Vienna.

Your tour will explore two of the remaining iconographic stations while exploring Viennese Art Nouveau more in depth. You’ll start at Karlsplatz with a visit to the small Wagner Museum. Afterwards you’ll move on to Stadtpark station, the best preserved of the original metro stations still in use, where you’ll be able to admire its characteristic elements. Your tour will also emphasize the nearby artificial riverbed created for the Vienna river to help re-channel the waterway and match the landscape.

Next you’ll visit the Kettenbrücke station. Vivaldi moved to Vienna in 1740, three years after the completion of the impressive St. Charles Church. However, Vivaldi’s stay in Vienna was not very lucky. Impoverished, he died here on 28 July 1741 and was buried at the St. Charles Church on the “Spitaller Gottsacker”. His tomb, like the one of Mozart, was not preserved.

One of Vivaldi’s most famous compositions, the “Four Seasons” lives on. Four revolutionary violin concerts about four poems, written by Vivaldi, containing thunderstorms and flashes, breaking ice and twittering of birds, barking dogs, a band of hunters and many more spectacular impressions. This tour will take you to Salzkammergut, a region known for its scenic lakes and mountains. First stop in Gmunden, where the well-known Orth castle is located on a small island in Traunsee. Continue on the bus until you reach Hallstatt, the World Heritage town with its idyllic location next to Hallstätter. Learn more about the town’s development on a 40 minute walking tour. Hear about its salt deposits and the unique collection of hand-painted skulls, which you can see during a visit to the ossuary.

Dive into Vienna’s rich and varied past on this 3-hour walking tour. You’ll start off at Michaelerplatz, outside the Hofburg. The square has stood outside the Habsburg’s imperial palace since the thirteenth century. The square also contains the Loos house, a green and gray building created by Austrian architect Adolf Loos (1870-1933).

Your tour moves on to Kohlmarkt and the Graben, which are now one of the city’s most stylish shopping districts, but also contain a variety of historical structures, ranging from a plague column, to a baroque church, and even the national architectural icon of Austria: the Stephansdom.

You’ll also pass through three destinations connected to the Habsburg’s lavish tripartite burials. St. Stephen’s Cathedral contains the imperial entrails, Capuchin Church holds the sarcophagi of centuries of Vienna’s rulers, and St. Augustine’s Church has dozens of silver urns, each with a Hapsburg heart inside.

The tour will follow the edge of the inner city, where you can see the remains of the 12th century city walls, which held back two sieges by the Ottoman Empire (1529 and 1683). These tough structures were eventually removed to create space for the large circular boulevard of the Ringstrasse.

You’ll move on to Schwarzenbergplatz, with a giant fountain and memorial to the Russian soldiers who died while liberating Vienna from the Nazis in World War II. The area also houses the majority of the city’s embassies. You’ll quickly pass by the Belvedere Palace before moving on to Karlsplatz and a gorgeous view of the gold-­domed Secession building and the Naschmarkt.

Your tour ends in the Museums­ Quartier and Maria­Theresien­ Platz. Here, at the end of your educational walk through Austria’s capital, you can find the city’s largest concentration of museums to further feed your intellectual curiosity

We begin our encounter with the astonishing High Baroque Schönbrunn Palace (built to rival Versailles) with a stroll through the magnificent formal gardens, exploring the Baroque landscaping principle of interlaced nature and architecture that is illustrated everywhere in the layout of the grounds. Approaching the Gloriette, a huge triumphal arch situated on a hilltop with
panoramic views of Vienna’s woods, we recall the military victories that made Empress Maria Theresa’s reign (1740-1780) a highpoint of the Hapsburg dynasty’s political and cultural dominance in Europe. The park was opened not only to the court but to the general public from 1779, a populist gesture that reveals Maria Theresa’s canny charm offensive towards her subjects.

For example, Maria Theresa’s music room was the setting of acoustical delights attended by the imperial family in a glittering Rococo ambiance of gilt mirrors and lavish chandeliers. The six year old Mozart performed here for the family. The Hapsburgs’ devotion to the development of classical music did not end at their support of brilliant professional composers; many of the children were trained themselves as advanced musicians and expected to exhibit their skills in private entertainments held in this space. The Empress herself acted in plays in the private theatre.

The unique “Millions Room” owes its name to a fabulous price in gold ducats paid for it: antiquated Indo-Persian miniatures with rococo-frames, wall hangings manufactured of carved rosewood from the Antilles make the “Millions chamber” one of the most accomplished combinations of Oriental and European decorative art from the Rococo era.
