Discover the West – Paphos

Cyprus is home to some hugely important ancient Greek and Roman sites. On this day-long Paphos tour from Ayia Napa, you’ll take in Aphrodite’s Rock, Ancient Paphos and the Tomb of the Kings, make a short visit to the archaeological site at Kourion – and enjoy some free time in Paphos town.

After a coffee pit-stop along the way, you’ll head to Kourion to briefly explore landmarks such as the impressive theatre – dating from the second century BC – and the Agora. En route to Paphos, there’s a photo stop at Petra tou Romiou – or Aphrodite’s Rock – where, legend has it, Aphrodite emerged from the sea foam.

Next, journey on to Ancient Paphos for a guided visit to the legendary Tombs of the Kings, the House of Dionysos and its incredibly well-preserved mosaics. Later, you’ll enjoy some free time in Paphos town – perhaps to take a stroll down to pretty Paphos harbour or grab a bite to eat at one of the many terrace cafés.

Kyrenia and Famagusta

A trip to the north of the island is a great way to learn about the turbulent history of Cyprus. Time has seemingly stopped still in this Turkish-controlled sector as you’ll discover why when you set foot in Famagusta – a city that has become one of the symbols of the island’s division.

Explore the walled old town of Famagusta and admire one of the most dramatic ensembles of medieval architecture in the eastern Mediterranean. And not far from Famagusta is Salamis, one of the largest and most significant archaeological excavation sites in Cyprus.

The charming harbour town of Kyrenia invites you to linger a little longer. You’ll take a guided tour of the castle and visit the shipwreck museum, before enjoying some free time. Next up is a visit to the ruins of the Gothic Bellapais Abbey. The setting on a mountain slope is as beautiful as the views down Kyrenia and the Mediterranean. It was in the village of Bellapais that writer Lawrence Durrell lived and wrote his novel, Bitter Lemons.

Famagusta & Blue Lagoon 4X4

Unlock all the secrets of Cyprus by both land and sea. By road, you’ll visit two of the island’s most intriguing spots – the old town of Famagusta and the ‘ghost town’ of Varosha. Then by sea, there’s time to chill out on a relaxing cruise to the Blue Lagoon.

Travelling in an off-road vehicle, our first pit stop is the Famagusta culture centre to understand the history of the island. Then pass through the military checkpoint into northern Cyprus and gaze at the haunting sight of Varosha – once a popular beach resort, it’s lain abandoned since the Turkish invasion more than 40 years ago and is now a no-go zone.

On to Famagusta old town and you can explore the Venetian city walls, its collection of church ruins, or the Gothic cathedral turned mosque. Finally, we switch exploration for relaxation with a boat cruise to the Blue Lagoon where there’s lunch on-board and plenty of time to swim, snorkel or sunbathe.

Surf and Turf 4×4 Jeepsafari

On this trip, you’ll explore the Akamas peninsula by land and sea. And, rather than your typical coach set-up, you’ll be in a 4×4 vehicle. The area is known for its natural beauty, so you’re in for a real treat. Star turns include Lara Beach, a boat trip to the Blue Lagoon and the Baths of Aphrodite.

First up is Lara Beach. It’s the location of a turtle conservation project, which has been protecting endangered sea turtles for decades. Next, your guide will drive you to Latchi harbour, where you’ll board a boat to the Blue Lagoon. With clear, turquoise waters this bay is a great swimming spot. You might see turtles here, too.

Once you get back to Latchi, you’ll have a traditional meze-style lunch in a local restaurant. Then, you’ll hop back into the 4×4 to visit the steeped-in-legend Baths of Aphrodite. Set on top of a hill with views over the peninsula, it’s said this is the spot where the Goddess of Love, Aphrodite, met her lover, Adonis.

After free time for lunch, you’ll explore Famagusta. Your guide will show you sights such as the Venetian castle and the Gothic cathedral turned mosque.

Turkish Bath – from Altinkum

Relax into your holiday and kick-start your tan with a Turkish bath or hamam. These places have existed in Turkey for centuries and for good reason – they’re a serious refresher for the mind, body and soul. They’re also great for tanning – exfoliating your skin to help boost your bronzing.

And on this trip, you’ll visit one of the best local baths. Change into your swimwear in a cubicle, wrap yourself in a towel and step into the marble-tiled hamam or steam room. Then, sit on a heated marble bench and let the warm steam open your pores and ease the toxins from your skin.

Next, you’ll lie on a warm stone slab for a body scrub. And after that, you’re treated to a massage in warm, soapy bubbles. Once you’ve cooled off, you’ll come away feeling utterly refreshed. There’s an optional oil massage available for an extra charge, too.

Ephesus & Sirince

The ancient world and old ways come to life during this excursion to Ephesus and Sirince. The classical Greek city of Ephesus was the location of one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World – the Temple of Artemis – while time seems to have stood still in the pretty mountain village of Sirince.

You’ll travel into sun-soaked hills and olive groves to discover one of the best preserved archaeological sites in the world. Wander down marble-paved streets of Ephesus, gaze at mosaics and fresco-adorned ancient Roman houses and admire impressive historical buildings, including the famous Library of Celsus, the baths, Temple of Hadrian, the grand theatre and more.

It’s a little less ancient but a sense of yesteryear permeates in Sirince. Here you’ll have lunch at a typical restaurant before enjoying some free time to stroll along its cobbled streets. On the way back to your hotel, you’ll stop at a ceramic centre and Turkish delight emporium.

Saturday Market

Turkey is nothing short of a shopper’s paradise. So what better way to spend a morning than searching for souvenirs, trinkets and treasures in a bustling street bazaar.

Picked up from your hotel, you’ll be dropped into the beating heart of any Turkish town – the bazaar. Wander round the rows of shaded stalls and for the best price you can barter for, you’ll find everything from exotic fruits, vegetables and spices, to knock-off footy strips and designer fakes.

You’ll pass tables laden with tempting foodstuffs. Stands piled with soft-knit pashminas and bejewelled slippers. And rack after rack of soft leather bags, brightly painted pots and gleaming brass ornaments. You name it you’ll probably find it here – just make sure you haggle to get the best deals. Whatever you do, don’t leave without buying a box of sugar-dusted Turkish Delight. These sticky sweets are an exotic taste of Turkey and a great take-home treat.

Daytime in Turkey can be scorching, so this tour saves the exploring for the evening, when things have cooled down a bit. What’s more, you’ll do it in two ways – along the coast by boat and through the town on foot.

Kick off with a sunset cruise – heading away from the harbour, you’ll sail past tiny islands and hidden coves as the sun melts below the horizon.

Back in town, you’ll have time to meander through the cobbled streets of Fethiye’s old town, where you’ll find lots of little shops and stalls, plus plenty of dinner spots serving Turkish specialities and fresh seafood.

Expect landscapes of deep gorges, pine forests and fruit orchards. This is one of our TUI Collection excursions, which give you a local flavour of the destination while showcasing its unique, authentic and responsible values.

We kick off with a drive to Faralya. It’s locally known as the ‘village on the cliffs of the Butterfly Valley’, which says everything you need to know about its location. The mosque’s minaret is a great selfie backdrop. Then it’s on to the star of the show – Kayakoy.

Draped over a hillside, its was abandoned by Greeks, fleeing war in the 1920s. Meander through silent streets that once rang with voices. Peek into roofless stone houses as your guide explains their tiered designs, and the tiny chapels and little school. And see the empty basilica, with its faded frescos and mosaics. Eerie yet fascinating. There’s also a farm visit, too.

The town is packed with attraction – with its picturesque harbour, new town and walled old quarter built by the Knights of St John. Tick through sights including the Street of the Knights, the vast Palace of the Grand Masters and 15th century Hospital of the Knights. Once you’re done with history, explore the cobbled passageways – they’re filled with fountains, churches and shops selling local handicrafts and delicacies. You’ll feel like you’re a million miles away from the beaches, as you head inland and discover the secrets of Almeria. This is one of our TUI Collection excursions, which give you a local flavour of the destination while showcasing its unique, authentic and responsible values.

At Cortijo del Cura – the province’s first organic winery– the owner will proudly tell you about the wines, which are made using completely organic products and processes. Have a wander around the peaceful orchards and take a peek in the museum before tasting some of the wines and other local products.

This scenic tour then continues through the Sierra de Gádor – a stunning backdrop for photos. You’ll also learn all about little Spanish dishes known as tapas and enjoy a taste first-hand when you call in at a local village.

Sierra Nevada

A chance to see the ‘other Andalusia’ in the highlands of the Sierra Nevada. You’ll drive past rocky outcrops, olive groves, almond and cork trees and cultivated farmland with stops in Puerto La Ragua and Guadix. This is one of our TUI Collection excursions, which give you a local flavour of the destination while showcasing its unique, authentic and responsible values.

At Puerto La Ragua, there’ll be a stop and a short walk through the pine trees, in a peaceful nature reserve. Then in the foothills, head past shark fin-shaped peaks to Guadix – it’s the picture of a fantastical town that’s jumped out of the pages of The Hobbit. You’ll notice chimneys sprouting from the hills and mysterious whitewashed doorways leading into the mountainsides – and get to see inside one of these unusual cave dwellers’ homes.

You’ll also get a feel for the traditional lives of the locals when you stop at an earthenware shop – see hand-painted ceramics and watch a pottery-making demonstration.

Sierra Nevada

Mojacar with boat

This tour combines two of the Almeria’s top attractions – the Cabo de Gata Nature Reserve and the historic hilltop village of Mojacar. You’ll cruise off the coast of the Cabo de Gata and then head by coach to Mojacar, one of the prettiest pueblos in eastern Andalusia.

Sailing from the port of Carboneras, the boat trip offers great views of Cabo de Gata – the largest protected coastal area in Spain. Pass hidden coves, imposing cliffs and pretty beaches while nursing a complimentary drink on board. You’ll also see the enticingly beautiful Playa de los Muertos – though it means ‘Beach of the Dead’, it’s more a case of a beach to die for.

Then it’s time for Mojacar itself. A guided tour will give you the lowdown on its long history – it’s believed to have been settled some 4,000 years ago – as you wander through winding alleys of whitewashed homes. See the Moorish fountain, city gate, St Mary’s church and more during a pleasant stroll through the village. And on the return journey, you’ll pass through the impressive Tabernas desert.

Mojacar with boat

Mojacar

If it’s a typical Spanish ‘pueblo’ that you’re after, then Mojacar’s your town. You’ll cross some pretty Wild West-looking scenery on your way, heading across the Tabernas desert. And you won’t be disappointed when you get there – the town is made of white, sugar-cubed houses that tumble down the rocky hillside. There’s also a visit to a coastal fishing village.

Mojacar’s a tangle of cobbled streets which are lined with quaint shops and cute cafés and there are plenty of Moorish leftovers to admire including a spring water fountain and flower-filled terraces.

Then take a trip to a typical coastal village. Head over to the beach for a dip or you can wander along the beautiful promenade.

Oasys MiniHollywood

The Good, the Bad and the Ugly have all blown through with the tumbleweed in Oasys MiniHollywood. Anthony Quinn, Sean Connery and Brigitte Bardot all ‘got the T-shirt’. Even Clint Eastwood scuffed the dusty streets in spaghetti western, A Fistful of Dollars.

And now his cigar-chomping hero is replaced by rootin’-tootin’ cowboy stunt shows that’ll have you gunning for more. Once a Hollywood movie paradise and based around an old Wild West town film set, this theme park puts on exciting shoot-outs, can-can shows and stunt riding, recreating legendary scenes in cinema history all with a beautiful desert backdrop.

Once the show’s over, there’s a miniature zoo with more than 800 animals from 200 different species, located in among lush vegetation of over 400 trees. It’s interesting stuff, as the centre supports an educational, research and conservation programme. Plus if you wish, you can take a dip in one of the pools, refuel in the restaurant or poke around one of the souvenir shops.

Nerja and Frigiliana Tour

Considered one of the most picturesque parts of the Costa del Sol, Nerja and nearby Frigiliana evoke the Andalusia of yesteryear. You’ll venture along the rocky coast towards the whitewashed village of Frigiliana before reaching Nerja and its famous Balcony of Europe. Topping off the tour is a visit to a botanical garden.

Frigiliana is a mainstay on lists of Spain’s most beautiful villages, and the drive from Almeria is also a sight to behold. You’ll head inland to the foothills of the Almijara Mountains to explore this typical whitewashed village. Amble along the hilly streets of the old town and browse the handicraft shops.

Then, it’s down to Nerja on the coast. Unusually for a seaside resort, it has retained a typical Andalusian appearance and atmosphere. You’ll have free time to poke around shops and cafés, and stop at Balcony of Europe to view the cove-strewn coastline. Finally, we’ll swing by a beautiful botanical garden before the journey back to your hotel.

Tabernas desert from Leone to Spielberg the route of the stars

The Tabernas desert is considered one of the only true desert in Europe. 12.000 hectares protected enclosing a sedimentary eroded landscape, with average annual sunshine about more than 3,000 hours and below 250 mm rainfall per year. When Mediterranean’s sea covered the area of Tabernas and after millions of years to more than 500 meters depth, in times when the coastline was located at the foot of the Sierra de Los Filabres, several tectonic movements caused the gradual lifting of the sedimentary basin, settling the current landscape by erosion and over time.

During the route, you stop at all the micro landscapes which conform the desert as if it were a movie making reference to its geology, its vital features as well as its importance in the history of cinema past and present. Iconic films have been shot at this area as “Lawrence of Arabia”, “For a few dollars more,” “Indiana Jones”, “Patton” or “Millenium”.

Along the 4×4 route, the guide will stop to explain to you the most relevant geologic’s freaks, the history and the environmental aspects of this unique place.
