Excursions Croatia by Musement

Elaphite Islands

There are more than 1,000 islands in Croatia – but few are more beautiful than the 13 in the Elaphite Islands. On this full day island-hopping excursion you’ll visit the two largest – Lopud and Sipan – and explore these oases of scented citrus plantations, pine-clad hills and sandy beaches.

After pick-up at your hotel, we’ll head for Gruz port to hop on a boat and sail to Lopud. The second largest island in the archipelago is car-free and mostly covered in thick woodlands, among which can be found long-abandoned chapels. You’ll have free time to wander around the picturesque old harbour or drop into the Franciscan monastery.

We’ll then sail to Sipan, the largest of the islands, for a lunch of either fish or chicken. It used to be the summer playground of Dubrovnik aristocrats, and palatial villas in various states of repair can be spotted. Stroll the promenade under gaze of locals playing cards in cafeterias or knitting in porches.

The day kicks off in Perast, where you’ll visit the small island of Our Lady of the Rocks and the church bearing the same name – famous for the 68 frescos painted by one of the masters of the baroque fresco painting, Tripo Kokolja. Our next stop will be Kotor – a UNESCO-listed fortified medieval town, which is presented in its full beauty during a guided tour.

You’ll have free time here, too. Drop into the famous St Tryphon Cathedral – considered a masterpiece of Romanesque architecture – and the Maritime Museum, or soak it all up with a drink in the square.

The Korcula archipelago’s 20 islands, islets and cliffs stand out for their beauty even in such as beautiful region as Dalmatian. This amazing boat trip takes you to island such as Badija, Vrnik and Majsan, and also to pretty fishing village of Lumbarda, where you’ll have free time to hit the beach.

Three islands south is Vrnik, the only one in the archipelago still inhabited. You can visit some of the quarries – stone from here was used in Ayia Sofia in Istanbul and Washington DC. And on Majsan, there’s a recently unearthed pre-historic site. What’s more, there’s a wine tasting on board.

After all that island hopping, it’s time to dock at Lumbarda, which was the first Greek colony in the Adriatic in classical times. Maybe visit the villas of the old noble families or vineyards growing the local Grk grape, or go for a swim during your free time here.

We then head to Dubrovnik. Explore the UNESCO World Heritage Site old town with your guide, see Onofrio’s fountain, the cathedral and much more.

Then, after some free time in Dubrovnik, the journey back takes you through the vineyards of the Peljesac peninsula. Here, you’ll indulge in a wine-tasting session. A great way to round off a day steeped in the heritage of Dalmatia.

Dip into the galleries, admire the churches or drop into one of the pocket-sized cafés.

Mljet Island Tour

Over two-thirds of Mljet is covered in forest, so this Adriatic gem is as unspoilt as they come. On this half-day, small-group trip by van you’ll trundle through most of the villages on the island, stop off at Babino Polje, and hit the sandy beach in Saplunara for some much-deserved swimming.

Odysseus Cave from Mljet

Legend has it that Odysseus took shelter in one of Mljet’s caves after a shipwreck, and the name’s stuck ever since. You’ll take a boat trip out from Pomena to take a look, and swim if you like, inside this egg-shaped cave.

Once Odysseus landed on the shores of Ogygia, now known as the island of Mljet, he couldn’t resist the charm of the nymph Calypso and the island itself. So, it’s said he stayed for seven years before he was free to go, and you’ll see it all for yourself on this boat trip to Odysseus Cave.

After sailing for just over an hour, you’ll anchor up in front of the cave, which from the outside looks just like a small tunnel carved into the limestone rock. Then it’s up to you whether you swim or take a smaller boat inside, where once you’re through to the other side, everything opens up before you. You’ll have about an hour to take it all in before your return boat trip.

You’ll reach Krka National Park after a drive inland along the Cikola canyon as your guide gives you the lowdown on the area’s geology and history. In the park, you’ll see the beautiful Lake Visovac, famed for its islet with a monastery, and the Roski Slap falls. Locals call it ‘the necklaces’ because of its numerous cascades.

Follow a trail with your guide to the Skradinski Buk falls – it’s truly amazing to stand before it. The water bursts through the lush vegetation of its 17 travertine barriers. There’s a wooden platform from which to view this natural masterpiece or you can dip into the base pool. You’ll also learn about Europe’s first hydropower plant during the tour.

Tabarca Island Boat Trip

Tiny Tabarca Island is one of the Costa Blanca’s best-kept secrets and a daytrip here is an unmissable experience. It’s just a 20-minute boat ride from the mainland but once you get there, you’ll feel like you’ve travelled back in time – there are no cars for a start. But this trip is more about what Tabarca does have.

There’s the walled town covering the western half of the island. It’s home to about 60 residents – a century ago, there were more than 1,000 – and has just a handful of streets. Then there’s the recently restored baroque church over by the sea – there can’t be many prettier churches in Spain. And then there are the gorgeous little coves and beaches with crystalline waters lapping against them.

And then there’s the rest of the island – an expanse of bushes and cactus punctured only by an old prison and lighthouse, with tracks leading to cemetery in the eastern tip. To walk from tip to tip takes about half an hour – so it’s very doable as well as enjoyable.

Manavgat Family Adventure Tour

Mountain roads and villages are the stars of this great family-orientated excursion. Start off with a visit to an orange grove. Then grab a bargain in a Turkish textile shop. For lunch there’s a barbecue on a TUI-exclusive island before a cruise down the River Manavgat.

It’s a tangy start to the day at the orange garden, where you’ll be able to enjoy a glass of freshly squeezed juice. Next up is a visit to a textile shop, where you’ll be tempted to grab a bargain. We rev up the action next with a couple of hours’ off-roading the highlands. Prepare yourself for some wild scenery.

For lunch, you’ll be served a specially prepared barbecue on a beautiful island and there’s a children’s playground to keep the little ones entertained. Manavgat Family Adventure Tour

Perge & Aspendos Tour

You’ll travel back in time to the days of togas and chariots with this half-day excursion to the ancient sites of Perga and Aspendos. Among the attractions you’ll discover is perhaps the best-preserved Roman theatre of all.

First on the history hitlist is the classical city of Perga. This once-bustling Roman port was founded around 1300 BC and the first stop for St Paul on his missionary journeys around the Mediterranean. Take a guided tour, stepping through the triumphal Roman gate to admire the ruined temples, marketplace and fountains. On the column-lined main street, you can even see the grooves in the flagstones created by chariot wheels. There’s also a 12,000-seater stadium and the remnants of a Bronze Age acropolis.

Next, we go to Aspendos to see one of the best-preserved theatres from antiquity. Built 2,000 years ago into a steep hillside and big enough for 15,000 spectators, its perfect acoustics mean that it’s still used for operas and concerts today.

Perge & Aspendos Tour

Pamukkale and Lake Salda

Pamukkale means ‘cotton castle’ in Turkish – and you’ll see why as soon as you set eyes upon its magical landscape. Heading deep into the Anatolian countryside, you’ll also visit Hierapolis, Lake Salda and Cleopatra’s Pool. This is one of our TUI Collection excursions, which give you a local flavour of the destination while showcasing its unique, authentic and responsible values.

Leaving Antalya early in the morning, you’ll arrive at Lake Salda Lake after a few hours’ scenic drive. It’s been compared to the Maldives for its long beaches and multi-toned blue waters. You’ll have free time to wander around and savour the beauty of the location

You’ll then head to Pamukkale for lunch. Afterwards, catch a peek of the bright white terraces before exploring the ruins of Hierapolis, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Then let off steam with a dip in Cleopatra’s Ancient Pool, where you swim among ancient ruins, before dinner in a forest restaurant on the way back.

Pamukkale and Lake Salda

Monster Off-Road, Jet Boat & Rafting

If there’s ever a trip out that combines all the thrills and spills you’d want, then this is it. You’ll ride through a nature park in a Monster Truck, whizz over Koprulu Canyon in a jet boat and supercharge the afternoon with some white water rafting. Even the transfer from the hotel is ramped up a level.

Side by night

All Roman ruins and great sea views, the peninsula town of Side is one of the must-sees in this corner of Turkey. What makes it doubly appealing is that its archaeological relics are randomly scattered around the old town.

An evening visit is the ideal way to combine some sightseeing and dinner. By arriving during the early evening you can check out Side’s showpiece – the Temple of Apollo. Perched on the end of the peninsula, it’s said that Antony and Cleopatra held love trysts under its shining white columns. And you’ll see it at the best time of day – sunset. When the sun has dropped below the horizon, you’ll have some free time on your own to look round.

Check out the other ruins or delve into the old town whose grid-like streets are stuffed with stone houses, shops and bazaars. After this, you’ll end your evening at a harbour-side restaurant where you can tuck into an included two-course dinner.

Blue Cruise Alanya

A boat trip that offers the best of both worlds – a tranquil start with a party atmosphere later on. This cruise along the Alanya coast is the perfect escape from the bustling resorts and when you’re fully recharged, get ready to dance along to your favourite top hits.

As you sail out of the harbour, sit back, relax and listen to the waves as you glide out to sea. You can chill out on the main deck and soak up the sun with a drink in hand and, when the captain drops anchor, jump in for a refreshing swim. A fresh and tasty lunch is served on board and, with all local drinks included, you can keep the cocktails coming.

In the afternoon there’ll be a couple more swim stops – bring a snorkel and mask to really make the most of the clear waters. Then it’s time to party. Banging tunes and lots of foam make for a full-on boat party atmosphere so you can dance and sing all the way back to dry land.

Kyrenia and Famagusta

A trip to the north of the island is a great way to learn about the turbulent history of Cyprus. Time has seemingly stopped still in this Turkish-controlled sector as you’ll discover why when you set foot in Famagusta – a city that has become one of the symbols of the island’s division.

Explore the walled old town of Famagusta and admire one of the most dramatic ensembles of medieval architecture in the eastern Mediterranean. And not far from Famagusta is Salamis, one of the largest and most significant archaeological excavation sites in Cyprus.

The charming harbour town of Kyrenia invites you to linger a little longer. You’ll take a guided tour of the castle and visit the shipwreck museum, before enjoying some free time. Next up is a visit to the ruins of the Gothic Bellapais Abbey. The setting on a mountain slope is as beautiful as the views down Kyrenia and the Mediterranean. It was in the village of Bellapais that writer Lawrence Durrell lived and wrote his novel, Bitter Lemons.

Cyprus is full of hidden treasures and you’ll explore some of the island’s rural highlights on this full day excursion into the Troodos Mountains. You’ll drive into the countryside – where most say the trip is worth it for the views alone – to Anogyra, Lampadistis Monastery and Kalopanayiotis with a few delights in between. This is one of our TUI Collection excursions, which give you a local flavour of the destination while showcasing its unique, authentic and responsible values.

First up is Anogyra – a gorgeous village that’s surrounded by carob trees. We’ll stop off at the Carob and Pasteli Museum to get better acquainted with this sweet treat before heading to Tzelefos Bridge. Then, it’s on to Kalopanayiotis village. Here, you’ll stop at a taverna for a traditional Cypriot lunch before another highlight on this day; the Lampadistis Monastery, inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list in 1985.

Apart from the complex of the three churches there are other monastic buildings including cells, auxiliary rooms and an oil press. And before heading back to the resort you’ll be able to sample a typical herbal tea in Mandria.

Winery tour with wine tasting and lunch at Marisa Cuomo in Amalfi coast

Marisa Cuomo is a member of The Grand Wine Tour, an association that counts among its members some of the best Italian wineries. The Grand Wine Tour is also the first quality mark to attest the excellence of hospitality in Italian wineries.

Overlooking the sea, at 500 meters above sea level, the Marisa Cuomo winery dominates a part of the Amalfi coast located in the town of Furore. The vines, planted on the rocks overlooking the sea, extend over ten hectares.

Gran Furor Divina Costiera is a brand that was founded in 1942 to accompany the sale of wines from the Costa di Furore. Andrea Ferraioli, who comes from a long line of local winemakers, bought the brand in 1980. Since then, Andrea Ferraioli and his wife Marisa Cuomo have embarked on an entrepreneurial adventure made stronger by the family bond that unites them: their extraordinary passion for wine lead the Cantine di Marisa Cuomo to become one of the best brands of Italian wine on the international market. The company’s iconic wine, famous throughout the world, is Furore Bianco Fiorduva, with golden yellow reflections and aromas reminiscent of the saline breeze and sweet apricots.

Organic wine and extra-virgin olive oil tasting at Casa di Baal near Amalfi

Casa di Baal is a farm located just a few kilometers from the Amalfi Coast and the archaeological site of Paestum, producing mainly organic wines and extra virgin olive oil. The Ancient Greeks and Romans chose this land more than 2000 years ago for its privileged location and the Romans called this region “Campania felix” which literally means fertile countryside.
Today the farm is run by the Salerno family that lives on-site and aims to run it as a closed cycle where everything that is consumed is made in the farm, in complete respect of nature.
The farm is located in an exceptional natural context: it is 150 meters above sea level, between the Amalfi Coast and the Cilento Coast. The influence of the sea breeze – the coastline is less than 10km away – and of the mountains in the back give a unique characteristic to the wines produced here.

The visit to the farm is a complete experience: it starts with the tour of the vineyards with an explanation of the company’s philosophy, based on biological farming and biodynamic processes; it then proceeds to the winery where the grapes are transformed into wine, and where the wines are bottled and stored for aging.

Two different tours and tastings have been designed in order to accompany you on your journey to discover the flavors and scents of the territory.
